This week, as reported by VMblog, Microsoft unveiled a “surprise” by providing a public beta for its hypervisor-based server virtualization technology, Hyper-V. Customers and partners today can download Windows Server 2008 RC1 Enterprise with the beta version of Hyper-V to evaluate the new technology, test applications and plan future consolidation, business continuity and high-availability projects.

Ecora discusses questions concerns with security and virtualization, stemming from an article in ComputerWorld. Four specific concerns are covered: virtual-machine escapes, patching challenges, running virtual machines in a DMZ, and the relative newness of the technology as a target for hackers.

Craig Roth has a post about the separation of applications and infrastructure. “As the infrastructure nature of communication, collaboration, and content (I’m including content creation in this category, not just what WCM or DM tools do) is being properly realized, we’re seeing a separation of what used to be considered “applications” into infrastructure with an application on top.”

Keep an Open Eye shows that the world of IT project management is stepping up with increasing emphasis on ITIL and SOA. IT managers are better managing risk and ROI with new portfolio and project management software. With the increase of better project management, IT processes are easier and are more likely to be tracked, resulting in a better overall process for all IT operations.
