Todd Hoff posted about cloud computing and managing downtime risk by connecting multiple data centers into a secure virtual LAN. He says that “true high availability requires a presence in multiple data centers. The recent downtime of even a high quality operation like Amazon makes this need all the more clear.”

A recent study in the UK finds that 20% of IT businesses do NOT have a disaster recovery plan in place. The findings suggest a major oversight on the part of some major organisations to understand the risks associated with IT downtime.

Doug McClure has a guest post from Steve Henning on the need for real-time analytics. The complexity of rapidly growing infrastructures, multiple servers, virtualization and SOA technologies and the constant pressure to keep IT budgets low creates a problem with business service performance and availability issues. According to Steve, “real time analytics-based solutions that leverage existing monitoring infrastructures are a necessity in today’s environment.”
