Virtualization 2.0 and Beyond: Reflections on Next Generation Data Center

Posted August 7th, 2008 by Joe Pendry

brand_logo As Next Generation Data Center (NGDC) wraps up this week, we couldn’t help but notice all of the activity focused on virtualization for the datacenter. Our own Jonah Paransky participated on a panel discussion moderated by Dan Kusnetzky that went well, and enjoyed the discussion and hearing the views of Albert Lee from Xkoto, Greg O’Connor from Trigence, and Lawrence Stein from Scalent Systems.

Dan asked a variety of questions, and covered the gamut, from questions on high availability servers and reliability, flexibility and Hypervisor, change management and pre-production testing, eliminating downtime, to server sprawl and spending IT dollars wisely; we heard it all. Data Center Knowledge reported feedback on the panel, saying “It’s [the market] slow going thus far, but the panel predicted that implementation of virtualization beyond consolidation will be driven by challenges in the data center.”

It will be interesting to see how virtualization continues to evolve for the data center, and the impact it has on IT operations.
